Browse &#038; download"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to get new Apple II software, there are a few ways to go about it.<\/p>\n<p>You could try a desktop browser on the Pi, such as the included Epiphany (a.k.a. Web), Midori, or Netsurf, or install an alternative\u00a0such as <a title=\"Chromium (Google Chrome for Raspberry Pi)\" href=\"http:\/\/elinux.org\/RPi_Chromium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chromium<\/a>, the open-source cousin of Google Chrome, or <a title=\"Iceweasel (Firefox for Raspbian)\" href=\"http:\/\/elinux.org\/RPi_IceWeasel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iceweasel<\/a>, which is a rebranded Firefox.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">You can also download with a modern computer, and <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" title=\"A2CLOUD: make a floppy or image\" href=\"https:\/\/appleii.ivanx.com\/a2cloud\/a2cloud-make-a-floppy\/\">copy to your Pi over your network<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">. If you don&#8217;t want to immediately create a real floppy, see the next post for what to do with your downloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Or, for maximum fun, you can browse and download with your Apple II, because\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">A2CLOUD provides you with the stuff on your Pi that you need. My general advice here is to just dive in and try these out if you&#8217;re not familiar with them. You&#8217;ll find no shortage of help for most of these if you search for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unless you&#8217;re using ProTERM or Spectrum on an Apple IIgs,\u00a0<em>remember to hold down solidApple when pressing the arrow keys<\/em>\u00a0when you&#8217;re using these programs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><code>lynx<\/code>: a text-only web browser which can access simply laid out sites. Examples: <code>lynx ivanx.com<\/code>, or a download site, like\u00a0<code>lynx mirrors.apple2.org.za<\/code>. ProTERM and Spectrum work better for lynx than Z-Link does. (You can also try out <a href=\"https:\/\/appleii.ivanx.com\/a2cloud\/open-thread\/#comment-2\">alternative text-only web browsers<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><code>links<\/code>: another text-only web browser you might, or might not, prefer to Lynx. If you see only a black screen when you start it, press the ESC key to see the menu.<\/p>\n<p><code>cftp<\/code>: What you&#8217;ll probably spend a lot of time using if you want new Apple II software. It&#8217;s for logging into FTP (File Transfer Protocol) servers. Unlike the traditional command line FTP program, cftp is full-screen, uses the arrow keys, and is easy. Example:\u00a0<code>cftp ftp.gno.org<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code>ftp<\/code>: The traditional command line FTP program. Example: <code>ftp ftp.gno.org<\/code>. It\u00a0uses (mostly) typical\u00a0<a title=\"A2CLOUD: learn basic Unix\" href=\"https:\/\/appleii.ivanx.com\/a2cloud\/?p=67\">Unix commands<\/a>. When asked for username, enter &#8220;anonymous&#8221; and then anything for the password. Use the usual directory listing and navigation commands (<code>cd<\/code>,\u00a0<code>pwd<\/code>,\u00a0<code>ls<\/code>), to browse the site, then\u00a0<code>get filename<\/code>\u00a0to download a file from a site, or\u00a0<code>put filename<\/code>\u00a0to upload a file to a site. To see the current local directory (the one you&#8217;ll be downloading into or uploading from), type\u00a0<code>!pwd<\/code>, and to change it, type\u00a0<code>lcd directoryPath<\/code>.
